The availability of coupons makes a great impact on whether or not I will purchase an item. Most of the time because of monetary constraints, I am scrounging for coupons and rebates to make ends meet. This makes for a frugal life taught to me by my mother. She was into couponing in the before all of the reality television shows came out about couponing. Although I am not nearly as into couponing as my mother was, I do often find coupons online and use them.
When I was younger my mother knew that due to my family’s monetary constraints if she wanted her three children to go to college that she needed to save money where she could. This caused a learning curve in my life, I learned that with a little effort anyone could save hundreds of dollars per year on basic life necessities. The idea that a lot of money could be saved in an hours work was intriguing, my mother as it seemed to me was the queen of coupons. More than once I have seen a store pay her for the food she was buying. I knew all the tricks about splitting up orders, have manufacturers and store coupons. Stacking coupons as she called it saved her the most money. I like to call it her super power. Her other super power was buying in bulk. I have seen my mother play all the cards as far as couponing goes, and she impressed some of these qualities on me.
Although I am not nearly as into couponing as my mother was when I was younger, if I know that I have to go shopping for a few things I will usually do a coupon search though the Sunday papers and through the wonderful world of the internet. I pride myself on my abilities to save money on a weekly basis. Money is a wonderful thing in the eyes of a poor college student who at times is literally buying a Coke out of the Coke machine with spare change to treat her asthma. Being a fan of collecting nickels, coupons are really a great thing. If I can find a coupon within the range of a 20 to 30 minutes, I will use it. No matter how inexpensive the item every little bit helps. I will be more than happy to walk into a store with five coupons in one hand and a three dollar rebate in the other. As a matter of fact I bought my mother’s Christmas present with a five dollar rebate to my campus bookstore and only had to pay two dollars more!
A note from us at I’m In: We can help you save with our books coupons, too!
My mother has always harped on me about saving money and pre college it didn’t seem like a big deal; however once the money got tight I was more than happy to be able to save a few dollars here and there. The savings always feel good, it’s a way for me to tell the world that I can in fact make it on my own. More money gets to go into my savings account every month and that means I have a little bit more money to pay my tuition. The even better thing is when I can buy things for other people and save a little money while doing it. I try to share the savings that coupons can bring but I cannot seem to find a lot of people my age that want to be seen with coupons. This is a little sad considering that we are all stretched in the money department when we are in college; however, you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink.
